During the course of each year, District 5 sponsors a variety of educational events for our members.
This page provides an overview of the various types of events in which you may participate, as well as links to the pages within the site which highlight those events. Please see below for information about Officer Training, Special Training Events, Toastmasters Leadership Institute, Speech Contests, and District Conferences.
To find out about dates, times and locations for specific events, please visit the District Calendar, which is updated regularly with the latest information.
The District conducts training sessions for club officers twice a year, during the December-February and June-August time frames. Attending Club Officer Training is important for several reasons:
- You help your Club by being formally trained for your position.
- You gain the opportunity to meet your District leaders and can network with other club officers in the same position - some with lots of experience and great ideas to share!
- Your club earns Distinguished Club Program (DCP) credit for Goal #9 by having at least four club officers trained each term.
Special Training Events
In addition to the Club Officer Training which is sponsored by the District, several special training events are also presented each term. As these events are scheduled, they will be posted on this page and on the District Calendar.
Toastmasters Leadership Institute
Twice each year, in January and July, the comprehensive training opportunity known as Toastmasters Leadership Institute (TLI) is presented by the District. In addition to providing training for the seven club officer roles, TLI includes a number of other training classes on a variety of topics of interest to Toastmasters members. Topics which have been presented at TLI in the past include:
- Speech Development
- Impromptu Speaking
- Effective Evaluation
- Planning & Running Club Contests
- Voice Coaching
- Train the Trainer
Each TLI session also includes a Keynote Speaker, refreshments, and opportunities for fellowship with other members.
Two series of contests are held each fall and each spring: In the Fall, we have the Humorous Speech and Table Topics contests. In the Spring, the International Speech and Evaluation contests take place.
Speech contests provide an opportunity for proficient speakers and those Toastmasters who are interested in competitive speaking to gain contest experience. Contests also provide an opportunity to learn by observing proficient speakers and are a great way to meet other Toastmasters outside of your club.
To learn more about speech contests and to access contest documentation, please visit the Speech Contests page.
District 5 sponsors two conferences each year, one in the Fall and one in the Spring. The District Conference includes educational sessions, opportunity drawings, special speakers, and of course, the District Speech Contests (International Speech and Evaluation in the Spring, Humorous Speech and Table Topics in the Fall). The conference also provides an opportunity to meet District Officers and fellow members from throughout the District.
